farm to table class, revisited

Having just taught another Basic Photography workshop yesterday, I was reminded that I still had not blogged about the awesome Farm to Table workshop I led back in September. How the time flies!

This workshop was a total blast. Thanks to the kind folks at Seabreeze Farm and Kurtwood Farms, nine of us were allowed to wander the grounds of two great properties and photograph lots of animals, some vegetable gardens, a butcher shop, and some deliciously stinky cheese.

George, Kristin, and Kurt- I cannot thank you enough for opening up your homes and businesses to us. You are wonderful.

I will definitely be holding more farm to table classes in the future, (in the Seattle area AND BEYOND) so please email me if you are interested in attending one and I will put you on the list. On a similar note, my next Food Photography workshop will be on Saturday, January 8th and space is limited. Drop me a line and I'll let you know how to register.

winter and spring at kurtwood

Well, I have posted the seasons at Kurtwood Farms all out of order so far, (remember fall? And summer?), so I may as well continue the trend.

I love seeing the contrast between the two groups of images below; the cold light and damp of winter, and the new growth of spring.

(Oh, and you may notice there are images of bees. Yes, bees. Kurt raises them and makes honey. I entered into the shoot that day as the consummate professional, cool as a cucumber, even leaning in to get close ups of the little buggers.
And then the bees started chasing me and making a very angry noise. I ran away, screaming like a little girl and shouting profanity that I will not repeat here.
Do you see the types of hazards I encounter???)

And then spring finally arrived....

A summer dinner on the farm

Okay, yes, I know this is backwards. I realize that I did a post back in October about autumn at Kurtwood Farms, and that it was timely since it was, in fact, autumn. But here it is, late winter, and I am finally getting around to posting some summer photos from my work with Kurtwood Farms.

I do this for two reasons:

First, if you have been following my work with this job, you know that the Sunday Cookhouse Dinners at Kurtwood are wonderful and renowned and yet, in all my excitement about the colors of fall, I forgot to share some images from one of these nights.

Second, aren't you just SO ready for spring right about now??? I know I am and have been since, oh, I don't know....October?! Anyway. These photos are a great pick-me-up because they remind me of what's to come. Like, for example, berries and squash blossoms and warm days with rose wine. And tomatoes. Lots and lots and LOTS of tomatoes.

So, dive in and remember that we don't have too much longer to wait for short sleeves and warm evenings.

(Note: the chef pictured below is the very talented, Morgan, who has since gone back to Portland. These days, the regular chef on the farm is the fantastic, Tyler, from fabulous Spring Hill in my 'hood, West Seattle.)
